What You Should Know About Cat Treats

The ins and outs of giving treats to cats aren't very clear. Most people have a good idea of when dogs should get treats: you treat your dog when he's done a trick correctly, when he's behaving himself, or just to pamper him. But treating your cat doesn't seem as intuitive. Many cat owners don't give their cats treats, mostly because they're not sure how. When to treat, how much is too much, or which treat is the best for your cat are all valid concerns. Today, I'm happy to answer some of those questions and help you do the best for your cat.

When to treat - What's a good reason for giving your cat a treat? There are lots of reasons! Treats are a great way to reward your cat and encourage good behavior. If your cat likes to scratch up the couch, but you see him walk by the couch without scratching at it, offer a treat. If kitty is usually scared when the washing machine is on, give her a treat if she doesn't run away when the laundry is being done.

Another reason for treats is training. Cats can be surprisingly easy to train, and treating them when they do a trick right is just as effective as doing so with a dog. If you don't plan on training your cat, you can always just give the treats once in a while, just to give your cat something special. Give your cat treats at the same time every day, and he'll learn to look forward to treat time!

How much is too much? - Treats are special snacks because they typically contain extra fat and flavorings that tastes delicious to your cat. Giving your cat too many treats can result in obesity, nutritional problems, and other health issues. Usually 4 or 5 small treats a day is plenty for your cat. Giving them any more than that can become a problem.

For the most accurate recommended amount, look on your cat treat package. Give that number of treats or fewer and your cat should have no problems.

Which treat is best for my cat? - Cats are all different with varied likes, dislikes, and general tastes. It's hard to say which treat your cat will like until you try some. I do recommend that you look for a treat that is on the healthier side; take care to avoid too much sugar, and artificial or poor quality ingredients.

I recommend trying your hand at making your own cat treats at least once. If you can do it easily, you can save lots of money and bond with your cat at the same time. Treats for cats are surprisingly easy to make  and there are even recipes for healthier versions.

Do you give your cat treats? If you didn't before, you might want to consider it. Cats don't need treats, of course, but given in moderation they can be a great way to reinforce good behavior and build bonds between you and your cat.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon
