Dog Theft on the Rise in the U.S.
Since 2008 America has faced an ever growing epidemic of small dog theft. Yes, believe it or not…people are really stealing other people's pets. It's a truly horrible trend. Criminals steal these dogs and either turn them back in for a reward or sell them to another family. Most times, the people purchasing these dogs have no idea that the pets they are buying have been taken from their homes!
How bad has it gotten? The number of in-home dog thefts has risen from 71 in 2008 to 224 in the first half of 2011. That's over a 200% increase in the number of thefts, assuming that the rest of the year saw no further losses. But sadly, it seems that this number will only increase.
The good news is that by being informed, you can prevent becoming a victim and losing your dog to theft. To learn ways to prevent YOUR dog from being taken, please read the following article: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/how-to-protect-against-dog-theft/page1.aspx
While small dogs are the most likely to be taken, large dogs have been stolen as well. Please safeguard all of your pets! Micro-chipping is an excellent way to protect your pet family. Learn about it at: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/microchipping-for-your-dog-s-safety/page1.aspx
Please make sure that your dog is wearing identification at all times and that you have a current picture of them available in case you need to make “Lost” or “Missing” posters. I sincerely hope that you never have to, but it's best to be prepared.
Until next time,
Dr. Jon
